FAQ

Q: What is the difference between Graduation and Commencement?

A: Graduation is the process of being awarded a degree. To be awarded a degree, candidates must apply for graduation. Commencement is the ceremony in which the achievement of a degree is recognized (walking across the stage). Actual degrees are not awarded at the commencement ceremony. A final degree audit must be completed before a degree is officially awarded. A degree audit will not be completed unless the candidate applies for graduation in the term in which they plan to graduate.

Q: I received an e-mail from the Center for Student and Professional Services saying that I’m cleared for graduation.  Is there anything else I need to do?

A: No, there’s nothing else you need to do.  Your e-mail should contain a link to the commencement website.  Visit that site for details on parking, arrival times, commencement start times, etc.

Q: Where do I get my cap and gown?  How do I order announcements?

A: You can purchase a cap and gown at the University Bookstore.  Staff at the bookstore can also assist you with ordering announcements.

Q: Will my name be in the program?

A: Your name will automatically be inserted into the program IF you met the graduation application deadline.

Q: How many people can I invite?  Do they need tickets?

A: You can invite as many people as you like; no tickets are required.  Seating is first come, first served.

Q: What are the requirements to graduate with honors?

A: Students must have completed at least 60 hours at Texas State to graduate with honors.  Students with a Texas State GPA of 3.4-3.59 will graduate Cum Laude; 3.6-3.79 will graduate Magna Cum Laude; 3.8+ will graduate Summa Cum Laude.

Q: Where do I get an honor cord?

A: Honor cords will be distributed when you arrive for the commencement ceremony.  If you belong to any other honor organizations, such as Kappa Delta Pi, you should contact them for information on appropriate regalia.
