Majors

The College of Education offers undergraduate majors in two academic departments: the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

Becoming a teacher requires a degree with an academic major and completion of a teacher education program. After deciding to be a teacher, a first important step is to decide what age group of children to teach. In Texas, four different certification levels are available. Students who want to teach Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 4, Grades 4 through 8, Special Education, Physical Education, or Health will select a major from the list below. Students who want to teach other subjects in Grades 8 through 12 will major in the subject that they want to teach. For example, if a person wants to be a teacher of English, then that person will select a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major in English and a suitable minor. More information about degree programs outside of the College of Education that lead to teacher certification can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Majors for students seeking careers in the Health, Fitness, Sports, and Recreation fields are also offered by the College of Education. Graduates of these programs are employed as Athletic Trainers, Rehabilitation Specialists, Coaches, and Personal Trainers -- just to name a few of the possibilities.

Advising Worksheets

Select a major from the list below to download an Advising Worksheet that lists all required courses for the degree. These files require Adobe Reader. This software may be downloaded for free at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

2008-10 Undergraduate Catalog Changes

The College of Education has reduced the minimum hours required for all of its degree programs, effective in the 2008-10 Undergraduate Catalog.  Students will not automatically be converted to these new degree programs.  It's up to each individual student to determine whether or not to update to the new catalog.  It may not be in every student's best interest to update to the 2008-10 catalog.  The Advising Worksheets for College of Education degree programs for the 2008 catalog year are available to download.  You may also access the 2008-10 Undergraduate Catalog online.
