ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION
During the first semester on campus, students who are planning to pursue teacher certification must attend a Teacher Education Information Meeting. Each semester, meeting dates and times will be posted on the Office of Educator Preparation website, www.education.txstate.edu/oep.
This sequence prepares a student for Student Teaching through planning learning activities within the classroom and understanding the learning development of a specific age. Students will integrate and apply knowledge from their entire program while teaching in collaboration with experienced teachers in the public schools with University guidance and supervision.
Students will begin the Education Course Sequence after the following requirements have been met:
· Completed 60 semester credit hours
· Earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA
· Been formally admitted into the Teacher Education program
Methods Courses (Education Core)
Must be completed with a grade of “C” or better the semester prior to the Field Based Block. Additional courses may be completed at this time.
CI 3325 Adolescent Growth and Development
CI 4332 Secondary Teaching: Curriculum and Technology
Apply for a Field Based Block (High School Block) placement prior to registration for the upcoming semester. An application is required. Refer to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction website at www.education.txstate.edu/ci for more information.
Field Based Block (High School Block)
The Field Based Block courses must be taken together as a group. Only available during the Fall and Spring semesters. Must be completed with a grade of “C” or better the semester prior to Student Teaching. Additional courses may be completed at this time.
CI 4343 Instructional Strategies for the Secondary Teacher
CI 4370 Classroom Management, Ethics, and Legal Issues in Secondary Teaching
RDG 3323 Teaching Reading in the Content Areas
Additional Field Based Block Information:
· 3 course field block: scheduled on M/W or T/H, 8 am-3:30 pm at a designated local school.
· 2 course field block: scheduled on M/W or T/H, 8 am-12:30 pm at a designated local school with RDG 3323 taken concurrently on campus.
· Students will satisfy their field experience requirement during the Field Based Block (High School Block).
· Professor will contact students via Texas State e-mail or letter before start of semester to provide additional information (classroom location, time, etc.) for courses.
Attend Student Teacher Roundup at the beginning of the semester prior to the student teaching semester. For dates and locations refer to the Office of Educator Preparation website at www.education.txstate.edu/oep. This meeting is MANDATORY and begins the Student Teaching Application process.
Take required practice tests for the TExES (Texas Examination of Educator Standards) at the beginning of the semester prior to student teaching. Refer to the Office of Educator Preparation (www.education.txstate.edu/oep) for additional information.
Take required TExES exams (Content Area and Pedagogy & Professional Responsibility) during the semester prior to student teaching. Practice tests must be completed before students will be given approval to register for the TExES/ExCET (real exam). Refer to the Office of Educator Preparation (www.education.txstate.edu/oep) for more information.
Student Teaching
Final semester after all coursework has been completed. Only available during the Fall and Spring semesters. 14 weeks, full-time, Monday-Friday, unpaid.
EDST 4681 Undergraduate Student Teaching 8-12
Prerequisites:
2.5 Overall GPA
2.5 GPA in all teaching fields (major and second teaching field)
All courses in teaching field must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
All Teacher Education courses (CI 3325, 4332, 4343, 4370, RDG 3323) must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
English 1310 and 1320 must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
Clear Tentatives with the Office of Educator Preparation by the stated deadline or you will be dropped from Student Teaching. The Student Teaching Tentatives packet lists all requirements pending completion (coursework, specific grades, GPA) before student teaching may be approved. This includes other requirements as determined by the department of your major.
Attend a Mandatory Student Teaching Meeting at the beginning of the semester. Expectations, policies, and procedures for Student Teaching will be discussed. Students will also receive their final placements and meet their university supervisors.
Apply for graduation online through CatsWeb (under Academic Records) at the beginning of the semester.
Upon completion of all certification requirements (student teaching, graduation and passing scores on required TExES exams), apply for certification on-line.
