Open and Advanced Institutes

For many teachers summer offers the best opportunity for in-depth professional development. The CTWP is prepared to offer on-site programming that can run for several hours to a week or more. Open Institutes are often designed to address a particular approach such as using digital forms of writing or working in bilingual classroom settings. The Advanced Institute is designed for Teacher Consultants who want to extend their knowledge and expertise. Advanced Institutes, like Open Institutes, can focus on a particular approach or topic such as assessing student writing. In both cases, participating teachers reflect on their own practice in the teaching of writing. They set professional goals, which might include designing and sequencing curriculum, and/or aligning curriculum to standards. Other activities include exploring current research and trends in areas such as interdisciplinary writing, creative writing, and grammar/mechanics. They examine their own writing process to better understand the skill and procedures they are teaching novice writers in their classrooms.
