
The Gifted and Talented Studies program at Texas State University-San Marcos is committed to re-imagining education and to working for access to meaningful and appropriate education for all children. The program offers multiple graduate courses. We welcome both graduate students who are pursuing a specialization in Gifted and Talented Education and graduate students in education who are looking for interesting elective courses.
CI 5308, Introduction to Gifted/Talented Education (Offered Fall, Thursday, 6:30 pm)
An introduction to gifted/talented education: analysis of conceptions of giftedness and gifted/talented education; examination of policies related to gifted/talented education; survey of assessment practices, pedagogy, program options, and equity issues in the field.
CI 5309, Talent Development (Offered Spring, Thursday, 6:30 pm)
Theories, research, and pedagogy related to talent development across the life course, with an emphasis on youth who perform at advanced levels. Multidisciplinary perspectives on learning and the development of expertise, expert performance, and wisdom in formal and informal learning environments. Trends in personalized education for interest, challenge, and meaning.
CI 5310, Creativity: Theories, Research, and Applications (Offered Summer, Thursdays, 6:30 pm; Also Offered Summer I, MTWHF, 10:00 am)
A multidisciplinary exploration of creativity theories, research, and applications. Implications of theory and research for creative thinking and innovation. Designed for Master's degree students in Education.
CI 5319, Social, Emotional, and Cultural Contexts of Advanced Development (Next Expected Offering: Summer 09)
Social, emotional, and cultural issues related to precociousness, creativity, and high performance in children and adolescents, with an emphasis on practices in school environments.
CI 5311, Practicum in Gifted/Talented Education (ARR)
Practicum in gifted/talented education. Typically taken after the completion of CI 5308, CI 5309, CI 5310, and CI 5319. Requires instructor permission.
