Course Offerings

The Talent Development program at Texas State University-San Marcos is committed to re-imagining education and to working for meaningful and optimally challenging education for all children. The program offers multiple graduate courses. We welcome graduate students who are pursuing specializations or minors in talent development, and graduate students in education who are looking for interesting elective courses.

CI 5308, Introduction to Gifted/Talented Education (anticipated to be offered: Summer 2010; Fall 2010)
An introduction to gifted/talented studies: analysis of conceptions of giftedness and gifted/talented education; examination of policies related to gifted/talented education; survey of assessment practices, pedagogy, program options, and equity issues.

CI 5309, Talent Development (Spring 2010; anticipated to be offered Spring 2011)
Students explore theories, research, and pedagogy related to talent development across the life course, with an emphasis on youth who perform at advanced levels. Multidisciplinary perspectives on learning and the development of expertise, expert performance, and wisdom in formal and informal learning environments are presented.

CI 5310, Creativity: Theories, Research, and Applications (anticipated to be offered: Summer 2010; Spring 2011)
A multidisciplinary exploration of creativity theories, research, and applications. Implications of theory and research for creative thinking and innovation. Designed for Master's degree students in Education.

CI 5319, Social, Emotional, and Cultural Contexts of Advanced Development (anticipated to be offered: Summer 2010)
Social, emotional, and cultural issues related to precociousness, creativity, and high performance in children and adolescents, with an emphasis on practices in school environments.

CI 5311, Practicum in Talent Development (formerly Practicum in Gifted Education) (Spring 2010; anticipated to be offered Fall 2010; not offered Spring 2011)
A capstone course in which students apply knowledge and skills in talent development in an educational setting. Graded on a credit (CR) , no credit (F) basis. Prerequisites: CI 5308, CI 5309, CI 5310, and CI 5319. Requires advance application and instructor permission.
