Reading Major

Reading Minor

or

Master Reading Teacher Certificate

Reading Major

The 39 hour M. Ed. degree in Reading Education program has one major:

  • Reading Education M.Ed. with Reading Specialist Certificate - for most students the purpose of the degree program is to provide a Masters Degree in Education with a major in Reading Education while at the same time supporting and guiding certified, experienced teachers as they prepare to pass the TExES to receive a prestigious Reading Specialist certificate. Moreover, students who receive this certificate automatically qualify for the Master Reading Teacher certificate (if they have three years teaching experience) without the need to pass the MRT TExES.

  • The goal of the program is to prepare certified teachers who are thoughtful inquirers and reflective decision makers that work effectively to enhance the language and literacy development of all students in a variety of educational settings ranging from reading classrooms, to providing professional development in reading education for classroom teachers, to administering school and district based reading programs; work with other professionals, families, and community members to improve literacy and language teaching and programs inside and outside the school; and who actively participate in professional activities and organizations related to language and literacy education at the state and national levels

It consists of 30 hours in reading including courses in language and literacy development, reading theory and research, teaching literacy from Pre-K through grade 16, teaching with children's / young adult literature, teaching reading and writing in a multilingual / multicultural environment, literacy assessment, and a two course internship.
