M.A. The Master of Arts in Secondary Education is designed to meet the needs of the experienced teachers and it may also serve to prepare students for doctoral studies in education. The major is 21 semester hours in secondary education and a 9 hour cognate in a closely related field or a minor in another academic area. Within those 21 hours are 6 hours of thesis work. The M.A. is not recommended for students who are also seeking certification. A guide for preparing and submitting a thesis is available from the Graduate College or click here to review the guidelines. Graduate Secondary Education Program Coordinator serves as the student’s primary academic advisor, but the student chooses a thesis advisor (in consultation with the academic advisor) and committee. Students are strongly advised to select a thesis advisor at the beginning of their program of studies as there must be a match between a student’s research interest and that of the thesis advisor. A written comprehensive examination is required of all M.A. Secondary Education majors.
