M.ED. in Secondary Ed

Master of Education in Secondary Education
Major: Secondary Education: With and Without Teacher Certification

 M.Ed. The Master of Education degree is designed for students who are seeking professional development to become more effective and more informed teachers. The 36-hour master of education (M.Ed.) with a major in secondary education usually consists of 24 semester hours in secondary education and 12-15 hours in an academic minor or a composite minor program. Students who do not have a teaching certificate may be required to complete background courses before beginning graduate course work. A written comprehensive examination is required of all M.Ed. Secondary Education majors. The Graduate Secondary Education Program Coordinator serves as the student's primary academic advisor.  If the minor is in a teaching field, an advisor from that discipline will be appointed.

M.Ed. without Teacher Certification

Students who are already certified to teach in Texas may seek the master of education degree to improve their practice and to grow professionally.  Others may use the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions learned in the graduate program to serve as campus leaders, facilitators, decision makers, researchers, curriculum developers, peer coaches and mentors, and change agents.  The 36-hour master of education (M.Ed.) with a major in secondary education usually consists of 24 semester hours in secondary education and 12-15 hours in an academic minor or a composite minor program.  A written comprehensive examination is required of all M.Ed. Secondary Education majors.  The Graduate Secondary Education Program Coordinator serves as the sutudent's primary academic advisor.  If the minor is in a teaching field, and advisor from that discipline will be appointed.

M.Ed./Secondary Education with a Composite Minor

All students who pursue the Master of Education with a major in Secondary Education must select an academic minor.  A list of minors may be found in the Graduate Callege catalog.  When a minor is not selected, the default minor is the 12-hour Composite program.  The Composite minor is the most popular minor among students who pursue the M.Ed. with a major in Secondary Education.

General Secondary focus requires a 12-15 hour minor.

If the minor is a composite minor, the default is as follows:

3 hours from SPED:

  • SPED 5326  Educating Students with Mild Disabilities
  • SPED 5360  The Education of Exceptional Children
  • SPED 5311  Teaching Language Arts in Students with Disabilities
  • SPED 5313  Education of Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders

3 hours from:

  • CI 5370  Classroom Management, Discipline & Legal Issues
  • CI 5372  Philosophical Foundations of Education

CI 5330  Multicultural Teaching & Learning

3 hours of 5000+ electives from CI, SPED, RDG, EDTC, or EDCL

Master of Education in Secondary Education
Specialization: Educational Technology

 M.Ed.  The purpose of the Master of Education with a specialization in educational technology is to meet the needs of the student seeking professional development in becoming a  campus-level technology specialist who is capable of establishing and directing a computer lab, providing in-service training for campus faculty, and developing grant proposals.  The major is 27 semester hours in secondary education with a focus on either elementary or secondary education.  A written comprehensive examination is required of all M.Ed. Secondary Education majors.  The Graduate Secondary Education Program Coordinator serves as the student's primary academic advisor.  If the minor is in a teaching field, an advisor from that discipline will be appointed.

Master of Education in Secondary Education
Focus: Gifted and Talented Education

 M.Ed.  The Master of Education degree is designed for students who are seeking professional development to become more effective and more informed teachers. The 36-hour master of education (M.Ed.) with a major in secondary education and a focus on gifted and talented education usually consists of 24 semester hours in secondary education and a 13-hour composite minor program.  Students who specialize in gifted and talented studies develop both conceptual principles and practical skills for maximizing learning, developing talent, and enhancing creativity.  Courses in the program emphasize theory and research and strive to develop practical strategies, personal growth, cross-cultural understanding, and collective responsibility.  Students who do not have a teaching certificate may be required to complete background courses before beginning graduate course work.  A written comprehensive examination is required of all M.Ed. Secondfary Education majors.  The Graduate Secondary Education Program Coordinator serves as the student's primary academic advisor.
