Ph.D. student Erika Nielson (Literacy) won the award for 'Best Written Work' in the graduate category for writing completed
in the 2015-2016 year in the recent Texas State University Writing Center competition. Her comprehensive exams written
project was selected as the winner, and she received her award at the English Department Awards Day on Thursday, April 13th.

Ph.D. student Ibeth Miranda (Literacy) was named President of Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society for Students
with Disabilities for Fall 2017. DAP is an academic honor society for students with disabilities in postsecondary education
that recognizes the academic accomplishments of students with disabilities and seeks to break the negative social
misconceptions that are often associated with this population of students.

Dr. Sydney Granger has accepted a position with The Volunteer Training Initiative. The Volunteer Training Initiative
is a Texas Workforce Commission grant-funded project housed at Literacy Texas. As the manager for the initiative,
Sydney will plan and execute statewide professional development symposiums for literacy providers who are affiliated
with organizations not supported by the Texas Workforce Commission’s Adult Education and Literacy funding,
which is primarily faith-based and community-based organizations.

Ph.D. student William J. Barry (Literacy) has accepted a position teaching Critical and Efficient Reading at
St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. The course extends the traditional developmental reading model by pairing with
a reading-intensive freshman studies course – Philosophy and Religion. Bill and the students with whom he works
attend both of the classes, developing and practicing specific strategies related to the diverse reading selection as
the semester unfolds.
