Degree Plan Info

Undergraduate Degree Planning

All students in the College of Education should contact the Center for Student and Professional Services (CSPS) for an initial appointment to complete paperwork necessary for entering programs in the College of Education. Following this, students may opt to meet with an advisor each semester for assistance with and approval for courses for upcoming registrations. Advising can be done on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Please refer to the posted advising schedule each month.

After completing 45-60 semester hours, students should request a degree audit through the college academic advising center or through through their major department as determined by college guidelines. When the audit is approved by the appropriate college dean or dean’s representative, it will list all courses required for graduation. Students also have the option to run their own unofficial audit at any time before seeing their advisor by going to CATSWEB. The audit should be used to determine which courses to take at each registration.

It is highly recommended that students see their Academic Advisors to review their degree audits within their last 30 hours prior to graduation. Students need to see that they have the appropriate grade-point averages in all courses taken at Texas State and in the major and minor fields of study. If any of the grade-point averages are below the minimums required for graduation, the degree audit can be used in deciding how to raise the averages in the remaining course work.

Request Degree Audit.

Graduate Degree Planning and Degree Audit

On the admission application, a student must identify the following choices: major, minor, cognate, no minor option, or area of concentration or specialization (depending on what is required in the program of study), degree type (M.A., M.Ed., M.S., etc.), thesis or non-thesis track.  During the first semester of admission, the student should meet with his or her graduate advisor to discuss options and plan the degree program.  Because graduate degree programs are individualized according to degree type and student goals, a student's particular degree program may exceed the number of hours identified for the major in this catalog.

After receiving a verified Degree Audit proposal from the student's graduate advisor, usually during the student's first semester after admission, the Office of the Graduate College will approve and finalize the official Degree Audit.  Two copies of the outline will be sent to the student, one for the student to sign and return to the Office of the Graduate College, and one for his or her records.  The Degree Audit will guide the student in selecting courses for registration each semester.  If the student enrolls prior to receipt of his or her official Degree Audit, the student should consult with his or her advisor prior to registration to ensure that the course(s) will count toward the degree.  Additionally, the student should request an updated Degree Audit the semester before he or she plans to graduate to make sure course work requirements have been met.

An deviations from the student's official Degree Audit must have prior approval by the graduate advisor and the Dean of the Graduate College.  Requests for changes to a student's Degree Audit must be submitted by the student's advisor to the Dean of the Graduate College on the Degree Audit Change Request Form that can be obtained from the Office of the Graduate College.
