Center for Autism Research, Evaluation, and Support (CARES)

CARES provides early autism diagnoses, including bilingual assessments, for children residing in Texas.  It also prepares school psychology, educational diagnosticians, and special education students to conduct comprehensive autism evaluations and to make referrals for treatment and support. The students and supervisors participating in the clinic come from the following academic departments at Texas State: Educational Administration and Psychological Services, The School Psychology Program, Curriculum and Instruction—Special Education, the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department's Physical Education and Physical Therapy Programs.

The research agenda of the clinic will include studies

  1. To determine the concurrent validity of various autism diagnostic instruments.
  2. To determine the role of motor development in autism diagnosis.
  3. To delineate the most effective and efficient diagnostic protocol for children
  4. To analyze the role of diagnostic information in speech intervention planning
  5. To enhance practices for differential diagnosis
  6. To determine the effectiveness of currently recommended diagnostic instruments.

More information is available on the CARES website.
