Certifications & Licenses

The College of Education offers programs of study leading to certificates or licenses in several areas. Detailed information about each one may be obtained by contacting the listed faculty.

Certificate/Licensure Eligibility Undergraduate Graduate Contact
Athletic Training Certification and Licensure Students who complete the Athletic Training program are prepared to take a test administered by the Board of Certification (BOC). Graduates who complete the test successfully earn a certificate issued by the BOC can apply for a state license (in Texas this is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensure and Regulation). If they move to another state, they must also check on state credentials necessary to practice in that state. Dr. Darcy Downey

Health Education Specialist Certification Students who complete at least 25 semester hours of public health/public health education coursework are eligible to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) Exam, the nationally recognized certification for pubic health educators. This is a nationally accredited certification administered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC). Master Health Education Specialist Certification Students who complete the M.S. in Public Health Education and Promotion and have 5 years of work experience in public health education and promotion are eligible to take the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) Exam, the nationally recognized advanced certification for public health educators. This is a nationally accredited certification administered by the National Commission for Health Education Ceredntialing, Inc. (NCHEC). Marriage and Family License Students who complete a master's degree in Professional Counseling with an emphasis in Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling are eligible to apply to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists for a license to practice as a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist.   Dr. Kathy Ybanez-Llorente

Parks and Recreation Professional Certification Upon graduation, majors in the Recreation Administration program are eligible to take the Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) examination.

Principal Certification

Students who successfully complete the required Principal certification coursework are eligible to take the TExES Principal (268) Examination and complete the Performance Assessment for School Leaders (PASL). The State of Texas issues a 5-year renewable certificate to those who pass the TExES Principal (268) and the PASL.

Professional Counselor License Students who complete a master's degree in Professional Counseling are eligible to apply to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors for a license to practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor.   Dr. Kathy Ybanez-Llorente

School Counseling Certification Students who complete a master's degree in Professional Counseling with the school counseling emphasis are eligible to apply to the State Board Educator Certification for a professional certificate in school counseling.    Dr. Kathy Ybanez-Llorente

School Psychology License The School Psychology program prepares students for licensure by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP) as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. The School Psychology program also prepares students to apply for certification as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP).    Dr. Paul Jantz

Superintendent Certification

Students who successfully complete the required superintendent certification coursework are recommended to take the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExEs) for Superintendent. The State of Texas issues a 5-year renewable certificate to those who pass the TExES.

Teacher Certification Students who complete the Educator Preparation Program as part of their major, pass the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES), and pass appropriate content certification exams can become certified to teach.

Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification

The following students are eligible to take the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) examination:

  • Undergraduate Recreation Administration students in the Therapeutic Recreation concentration (eligible after graduation)
  • Graduate students who complete a master's degree in Recreation and Leisure Services with a major in Therapeutic Recreation
