The San Marcos Student Reading Council (SMSRC) is an organization dedicated to promoting literacy, and is affiliated with the Texas State Reading Association and the International Reading Association. Students who join (SMSRC) also become members of the Texas State Reading Association and receive quality educational publications that inform teachers of curring-edge teaching strategies. There are multiple opportunities to enhance leadership skills. At monthly meetings students hear from top-notch speakers who address topics related to classroom.
Tentative date and time for our Spring Literacy Fling: May 2 from 2-4 pm at the San Marcos Public Library
The KDP Chapter in San Marcos will meet on Monday, February 2nd from 5 to 6 pm in Education Building, Room 2127. Mr. Dwight Stewart from Texas State's Center for Safe Communities and Schools will talk about gangs in schools. Professional development certificates will be distributed, door prizes will be awarded, and refreshments will be served. Members and non-members are always welcome.
We will distribute the calendar with our other upcoming events in San Marcos and in Round Rock soon. Stay tuned.

Activities: Each spring the faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the members of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, co-host the C&I Awards Day Celebration. At this event, the officers and sponsors of the student organizations are thanked for their leadership, the department's honor graduates are recognized, the scholarship recipients are announced, and the new members are initiated into Kappa Delta Pi. All parents and students are cordially invited to attend.
Texas State University College of Education developed the Tomas Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award to honor authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience. The award was established in 1995 and was named in honor of Dr. Tomás Rivera, a distinguished alumnus of Texas State University.

Thursday, October 30th –
Friday, October 31, 2008 Marisa Montes and Yuyi Morales will participate in the Texas Book Festival Reading Rock Stars Program. This program identifies a school for them to present to the children. Each child at the school will receive a free signed copy of the winning book with the award seal to take home.
