Graduate Program in Learning Disabilities / Inclusion

Learn to Teach in Inclusive Classrooms

Teacher and Students

Texas State University-San Marcos offers a graduate-level concentration in learning disabilities and inclusion (LD/Inclusion). Many special educators and most general educators in Texas have not received training that adequately prepares them to collaborate for the purpose of helping students with learning disabilities access general education curriculum in inclusive classrooms. Students with LD can benefit from a comprehensive array of research-based inclusion and collaborative strategies. Intensive training in the application of these specialized strategies will allow teachers and other educators to effectively support students with LD in varied educational settings. The master of education in special education with a concentration in LD/Inclusion provides advanced, specialized training in understanding learning disabilities, designing educational programs based on effective instructional strategies and accommodating students with LD in the general education classroom. This program integrates the latest in evidence-based practices for inclusive classrooms and is designed for general and special education teachers as well as others who provide direct or consultative services in the area of LD/Inclusion.

Course Work

The 36-hour master of education in special education degree provides advanced, specialized course work in areas critical to the education of students with learning disabilities, with an emphasis on instructional, behavioral and social needs. In addition to a master’s degree, students may also apply to earn a Texas State University certificate in LD/Inclusion. The program requires 30 hours in the major, plus six elective hours in a cognate.

Alternately, students may choose to pursue the LD/Inclusion certificate only. The LD/Inclusion certificate requires 18 hours in special education (six courses).
