The Elephants and Their Young unit provides a series of activities for students in Pre-Kinder through first grade.  Students first create model elephants out of paper and cardboard.  Later, they will create models of elephant’s ears, trunks, and tusks. As an enrichment activity, students role play using their models to investigate how elephants might behave in the wild during such activities as locating water sources and foraging for food.  The teacher will introduce the concept of conservation and how the ivory trade has played a role in elephant populations.  Then, the students will be asked to brainstorm and discuss alternatives to ivory.
