Project Description – Buzzing a Hive

Target grade level: kindergarten

Buzzing A Hive, allows children to discover the phenomenal communication system and sophisticated social structure of honeybees, as well as understanding the overall environment that they live in. Children will explore through various activities which will build off one and other. These activities include role-playing, literature, drama, and art. Role-playing is used to guide students through understanding about the bee’s communication system, and how bees come together to protect their hive. This unit also gives students the ability to use dramatic play and perform bee dances as well.

The unit will give the students an idea of what predator’s bees have, and what honey robbers are. The students will learn about metamorphosis and the body structure by making paper bees. The guide gives detailed posters of the anatomy of bees as well as the different life stages they go through. The students will create a mural with these posters that displays the overall ideas of the unit. The literature used will be a story called “Bee Enemies”.
