Introduction

The Liquid Explorations GEMS guide is a unit meant for grades 1 through 3 as a way of introducing the properties of matter to younger students. Lasting 5 or more class sessions, students explore using introductory language and simple concepts and it coincides with students’ development of their conservation of matter understanding. The five activities include a classification game, an investigation of how food coloring moves through different liquids and the creation of salad dressing recipes and an “Ocean in a Bottle.” The final activity, “Raindrops and Oil Drops” can be used to foster discussions of the environment. The unit also includes literature connections, resources and assessment suggestions for teachers.
