Introduce Terrarium Habitats

Activity 1

Students observe soil in journals

Soil profile test

Assign materials for students to bring on Tuesday

Activity 2

Students use their materials to build their terrarium

Add plants , soil and moisture

Students discuss concept of habitat in their journals.

Discuss what a habitat provides

Activity 3 Add earthworms

Observe the earthworms and learn about adaptations and decomposition in their journals.

After observations students place earthworms in terrarium.

Activity 4 Adding isopods to the terrarium

Observe the isopods using journals. Review concept of adaptation. Add the isopods after observations.

Activity 5

Students bring in other materials such as apple cores, egg shells, twigs, crickets, etc. to add to the terrarium.

Students draw what the terrarium looks like in the journal at this point.

Observe any changes in the terrarium in their journals. Has there been any decomposition? Students begin working on their poster presentations.

Each activity must be described and illustrated.

Students finish posters and present them to the class.

In groups students will create a play based on the organisms and processes observed in their terrarium habitats.

Students write their own lines and create their props.

Students will practice play in groups and perform for their class.

Students make final observations of their terrarium habitats in their journals. Students will complete the 4 question essay test.

Weekly observations over the next few month will be made to observe the decomposition process.
