Penguins and Their Young Project Description

This GEM guide’s main goal is to introduce children, grades PreK-2, to this rare bird.  Each activity is a way for the children to see different parts of a penguin’s life.  The first activity introduces the child to the living arrangements of penguins and the environment in which they live.  It allows the child to observe the change from water to ice.  This activity also requires thinking outside the box by telling them that this is a bird with wings that cannot fly.  Activity two introduces the children to the Emperor penguin, the tallest and most well known, of the seventeen varieties of penguin.  It shows societal roles through playing mommy and daddy and baby penguins.  Children also compare penguins to other birds.  Activity three uses role play to teach children what penguins eat.  Activity four continues to allow children to play with ice and learn more about the concept of ice and water.  Children learn that ice can take the shape of containers and observe the time it takes to melt.  Children also learn about health and how to make an icy snack.  The final goal of the guide is to introduce children to penguins and their environments.
