The GEMS guide, Mystery Festival is targeted for grades 2-8.  It includes one mystery for younger students, and one for older students.  Each mystery has different levels of detection allowing for participation among a range of age levels.  The activities include, “crime scene” investigation, conducting crime-lab tests of evidence.  Students analyze the results of the investigation and the evidence to try to solve the mystery.  One of the goals of this guide is for students to explore the distinction between evidence and inference.  Mystery Festival activities include careful experimentation, logical thinking, and real-life connections to forensic science.  The exciting mysteries aim at a correlation between science and detective work.  The guide offers five 45 to 60 minute sessions for each of the two mysteries.
